Steam tram, c. 1899. The steam tram network run by the Burnley and District Tramways was opened in 1881. It was the second to operate in Britain. The locomotive No. 12 and tramcar No. 14 were built at Loughborough in 1897. The journey times between Nelson and Burnley and Padiham and Burnley were both thirty minutes, but the gradients en route meant the top deck remained uncovered to reduce weight. The last steam tram ran in 1901.
